The Beatles’ Singles: 22 Songs That Changed The World

When we look back at The Beatles’ career, it’s only natural that we trace their progress through the groundbreaking albums they made between 1963 and 1969. But that only tells part of the story. The Beatles may have helped shift the focus from singles to long-playing albums, but at the start of their career they were, first and foremost, a band that made phenomenal singles, many of which didn’t actually appear on their albums. With pop music still primarily a singles market in the mid-60s, The Beatles’ singles, then, offer something of a parallel discography: a different lens through which to trace their artistic trajectory.

1962: ‘Love Me Do’

The group had actually recorded a single even before signing with Parlophone. Credited as The Beat Brothers, JohnPaulGeorge and Pete Best backed the English singer Tony Sheridan on a rocked-up version of ‘My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean’, which was released on Polydor in West Germany. It was a customer’s request for that recording that led to Liverpool record-shop owner Brian Epstein tracking down and eventually managing The Beatles.

Once Brian had secured them a short contract with George Martin’s Parlophone Records, a subsidiary of EMI, the producer began looking into which songs to include on their first single. “I picked up on ‘Love Me Do’ mainly because of the harmonica sound,” Martin later recalled. And so it was that the first Beatles single, ‘Love Me Do’/‘PS I Love You’, was issued in the UK on 5 October 1962 and entered the UK singles charts. After a few weeks of going up, then down, then back up and down again, it finally peaked at No.17 in the last week of 1962. They were off and running.

The Beatles’ first demo tape owned by Brian Epstein to auction at Sotheby’s

Brian Epstein’s personal copy of The Beatles first demo tape will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s next month, in a special auction dedicated to the Fab Four.

The tape, which the band recorded for Decca Records on January 1, 1962, was famously rejected by A&R boss Dick Rowe who told Epstein that “guitar bands are on the way out”.

This version of the demo recording is unique, with slightly longer versions of songs which mark it out as being Brian Epstein’s personal copy.

The reel-to-reel tape was one of two given to Epstein following the failed studio session, and the only one to survive.

Offered with superb provenance, the tape is now is expected to sell for £50,000 – £70,000 ($65,000 – $91,000)

In a new book, an insider offers a firsthand look at the Beatles. Here are a few takeaways.

Peter Asher is more than qualified to take us on a journey through the Beatles’ many songs and adventures. He’s a longtime friend of the band, and in the late ’60s was a producer for the Beatles’ Apple label, signing such talents as James Taylor. He’s been producing stars ever since and recently hosted SiriusXM’s radio show about the Fab Four, “From Me to You.” Though hardcore Beatles fans won’t find much that’s terribly surprising about the band in Asher’s new book, “The Beatles from A to Zed,” the writer and producer excels at excavating details and connections that sparkle and entertain.

Adopting Asher’s alphabetical format, here are some delightful — and less-than-delightful — takeaways from Asher’s book. (Space limitations kept me from including the full alphabet.)

A: A is for Abbey Road Studios. It was originally known as EMI Recording Studios and was inaugurated by Sir Edward Elgar, England’s famous classical composer who wrote that school graduation grind, “Pomp and Circumstance.” A is also for allusions. In James Taylor’s song “Carolina in My Mind, he mentions “the holy host of others standing around me.” That “holy host,” Asher reveals, is the Beatles. The title of Paul McCartney’s song “Queenie Eye” alludes to a Liverpool street game, but Asher, a well-off Londoner, has never heard of it. (One point for working-class Liverpool.)

Beatles lawsuit filed in South Florida alleges trademark infringement

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A lawsuit filed in South Florida on behalf of a London company owned by former members of the Beatles is seeking damages and injunctive relief against a group of defendants allegedly profiting from products featuring trademarked phrases.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, seeks to quash the sale of counterfeit goods using the trademarked phrases “The Beatles,” “Beatles” and “Yellow Submarine.”

It lists the plaintiffs as Apple Corps Ltd. — owned by Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison — and Subafilms Ltd. — an affiliated film production company that owns the rights to the English rock band’s 1968 animated movie.

The defendants in the lawsuit are described as “individuals, partnerships and unincorporated associations.”

According to the lawsuit, the defendants are “offering goods using counterfeit and confusingly similar imitations” of those available at the band’s official online store, using deceptive domain names and seller identifications intended to mislead consumers.
