Ed Sheeran will play himself in Danny Boyle’s untitled Beatles-inspired movie

Ed Sheeran will play himself in an as-yet-untitled, Beatles-inspired movie directed by Danny Boyle.

  • The film has been written by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings And A FuneralNotting Hill) and will star Himesh Patel, who played Tamwar Masood in Eastenders between 2007 and 2016. Patel’s character is a singer-songwriter who wakes up one day as the only person in the world with any memory of The Beatles.

“And then I discover him and take him on tour,” Sheeran explained, according to the Associated Press. “Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff. Yeah, it’s very clever.”

The musician added that the project had given him a chance to “learn how to act”. “With the Game Of Thrones thing, that was literally me popping in for a day and making a cameo,” he said. “But this was like full days on set, like 12-hour days.”

Sheeran’s parts were filmed earlier this year, during his latest tour. “It was a very intense two months,” he said. “I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film. I was playing myself so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to [mess] up.”

He added that he had other ambitions in cinema, saying he wanted to make “something like” Irish movie Once “where the songs dictate the film, in a way.”

Reflections on Liverpool Beatleweek 2018

Just back from Beatleweek 2018 in Liverpool. I’ve been going to Liverpool for the annual Beatles Convention since they started at the Adelphi Hotel in 1981. I’ve only missed 5 since. This year was great as usual, and it is wonderful to share it with my wife Irina and 10 year old daughter, Lilia.

We started off our week at a great talk by Jenny Boyd at the Beatles Story, about her experiences with the Beatles in India in 1968. Jenny was very open, and very charming and willingly posed for a great photo with us afterwards.

Friday, for me, was the musical highlight for me, with an incredible concert by the Analogues, who performed the ‘White Album’ in its entirety. They are an amazing band, who played and sang with great clarity and warmth. They also had great animated films for each song, which really added to the occasion. It was one of the best ‘tribute’ concerts I’ve ever been too – and I’ve been to a lot! In fact, the standard of live music throughout the whole week was incredibly good. Another highlight for my was the ‘Lennon and McCartney Songbook gig, with Jimmy Coburn playing John Lennon solo songs, followed by brother Tony playing Paul’s.

The Sunday convention had its usual mix of live music, guest speakers, dealers and films. We spent a lot of time in the smaller speaker’s room, listening to great talks by David Bedford and Ken Womak, about their new books. We also enjoyed ‘Ringo Bingo’ but unfortunately didn’t win!

Monday saw great titles ‘Scousechella’ concert – which a re-creation of the Coachella ‘Desert Trip’ festival, with tribute acts doing, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, The Who, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney sets. All were really good, but for me the best was ‘Eclipse’ who did an amazing rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ album.

All in all, it was another great Beatleweek, and great to meet up with lots of old friends.

Here’s top Beatleweek 2019!

A Night for Lonnie Donegan

No Lonnie Donegan, No Beatles – George Harrison

Finally. After way too long, we have a great follow up concert to the ‘Rock Island Line’ memorial concert for Lonnie Donegan back in 2004.

The late ‘King of Skiffle’ and ‘Godfather of British Rock n Roll’ whose hits include ‘Rock Island Line’, ‘Pick a Bale of Cotton’ and  ‘Jack of Diamonds’ – to name a few – inspired so many artists from The Beatles to the Rolling Stones, from Van Morrison to even The White Stripes’ Jack White – names Lonnie as one of his major influences.

Billy Bragg’s latest hit book which is flying off the shelves – ‘Roots Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed The World’ – is centred around the importance Lonnie Donegan had in almost single headedly changing the British music industry from his first hit ‘Rock Island Line’ and creating the ‘teenager’.

Joining us for this this very special event will not only be Billy, but a host of other great names including but not limited to: Ralph McTell, Chas and DaveThe Jive Aces, Chas McDevitt, Chris Difford, Vince Eager, Deborah Bonham, along with Nora Guthrie, daughter of seminal American folk writer, Woody Guthrie – whose songs provided Lonnie with several hits – and The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra

All these wonderful guest artists will be backed by the surviving members of Lonnie’s band of the last 40 years and the night will be hosted by Lonnie’s sons, Peter and Anthony Donegan, as well as some special guest hosts including broadcaster & author, Mike Read.

All proceeds go to assisting Lonnie’s grandson get his ABA therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This one off special concert will take place at beautiful and evocative Union Chapel in Islington, London.
